Drawing I Colored Pencil

Students in our Drawing I class recently wrapped up a unit focused on colored pencil techniques. As part of their exploration, they created detailed colored pencil drawings of apples on black paper, candy with foil wrappers on toned paper, and irises on illustration board. This project emphasized the art of layering, with students carefully building up multiple layers of colored pencil to achieve smooth blends and realistic tones inspired by resource photographs. The class’s hard work and attention to detail are evident in the examples below!

Drawing I Ink Drawings

The first few weeks of Drawing I are all about ink drawing! Students explore the art of hatching and cross-hatching — using lines to build up value, contrast, and depth. It’s a great way to practice control and precision while learning how light and shadow bring drawings to life. Drawing I Faces

Students in Drawing I class dove into the fundamentals of facial anatomy, studying the intricate details of eyes, noses, mouths, ears, and the basic proportions of the human face. The results, showcased here, reflect their hard work and observation skills. Each sketch demonstrates their phenomenal ability to capture the essence and proportions of the human head with remarkable precision. Well done to all our talented artists!

Drawing I: Local Architecture Project

The Local Architecture Project showcases Drawing I students' final ink compositions, inspired by their own photographs of local buildings. In this project, students applied intricate ink pen hatching techniques, skillfully layering lines to create value, contrast, and gradation. By mastering cross-hatching, they brought depth and dimension to their work, turning simple lines into compelling architectural studies. Their impressive results highlight both their technical growth and creative vision, as seen in the gallery below.

Drawing I: "The Old Barrel"

A classic exercise in ink drawing, "The Old Barrel" introduces Drawing I students to the essential techniques of ink pen hatching, where value, contrast, and gradation are built up through the careful layering of solid ink lines. This process teaches control and precision while encouraging students to think critically about light, shadow, and form. By mastering hatching, students gain the ability to create depth and dimension in their work, transforming simple lines into complex compositions. This exercise prepares students for their final project: an ink drawing based on their own photographs.

The collection includes colored pencil field drawings, sketchbook drawings, and ink drawings, such as the design for the Fall Play T-Shirt. Students were able earn service learning credit for creating designs to promote the play. This year's Drawing students showed exceptional dedication towards their sketchbook creations!

2012 JJC Area Art Exhibition

Congratulations to Matt Eike, Grant Riehle-Moeller, and Michael Thornton on being selected to participate in the 2012 JJC Area Art Exhibition. These three Drawing Class students will have ink drawings on display at JJC's Laura A. Sprague Art Gallery through November, with an awards ceremony scheduled for November 29th. Way to go, artists!

Drawing: Welcome!

Welcome to Drawing! Drawing I is a semester course (taken after Art I) designed to develop your ability to draw with ease and flexibility! The prerequisite for this class is a grade of "A" or "B" in Art I. You will be introduced to a variety of materials which may include colored pencil, chalk, scratch board, and ink. Each unit will be accompanied by a studio project designed to allow beginning students to master skills, and advanced students use those skills creatively and expressively. This course promotes ideas in imagery and self expression. Outside sketches will be a part of the evaluation process.
