Ceramics II Spring 2026

The Ceramics II course builds upon the foundational skills learned in Ceramics I. Through project-based assignments, students are encouraged to develop a stronger personal voice in their artwork. Projects begin with open-ended prompts that students may choose to follow "as-is" or use as a launching point for their own ideas. This approach allows students to apply their technical knowledge while exploring individual interests, strengthening both their craftsmanship and artistic expression.

This gallery showcases a wide range of student work from the Spring 2026 semester, including wheel-thrown pottery, hand-built clocks, birdhouses, and sculptural forms. New projects introduced this year included ceramic figures and connected wheel-thrown constructions that challenged students to create larger and more complex vessels. Throughout the semester, students combined creativity, problem-solving, and technical skill to produce artwork that reflects their unique perspectives. Ceramics II Water Fountain Project

The water fountain project combines engineering principles with artistic visual design and expert ceramic construction techniques to create a functional and visually appealing water feature. This project represents the pinnacle of ceramic education, offering students the opportunity to design and transform their initial sketches into a functioning work of art.

The gallery features a range of artworks, including functional ceramic clocks in Ceramics II, inspired by poetry about the theme of "time," as well as birdhouses influenced by famous artists' works. Additionally, the gallery presents an update on the latest painting and drawing projects.

Scenes from the Art Room: Ceramics II

The new art room is now fully operational and being used by our students to create amazing artworks. The space has been designed to inspire creativity and provide our students with an excellent platform to explore and hone their artistic skills. We are extremely grateful to all those who made this new facility a reality.

In addition, we would like to extend a special thanks to Nathan Toftoy for his outstanding efforts in documenting our students' ceramic creations throughout the year. His wonderful photography not only captures the essence of the pieces but also serves as a testament to the exceptional talent and dedication of our students. We are fortunate to have such a talented individual in our community, and we look forward to seeing more of his photography in the future!

Ceramics Wheel Thrown Pottery: Fall 2021

While it may look deceptively simple, the process of throwing pottery requires tremendous strength, skill, delicacy, patience, and determination.

It takes muscle to properly knead clay, shape it, and attach it to the wheel. It takes even more strength to steady one’s hands and guide the clay into a specific shape. The spinning wheel offers a strong gravitational pull which constantly forces the clay outward. The artist’s hands, must simultaneously push, pull, stay steady and braced, and restrain the clay while directing it to a final shape.

One wrong movement or stray finger and the pot is ruined in seconds, and the artist must start again.

As you can see by this display, fall semeter Ceramics students have done tremendous work with the potter’s wheel. And while the challenge is great, the rewards are even greater. Throwing on the wheel is an incredibly rewarding experience. Changing clay from soft, pliable material, into a purposeful vessel with strength and beauty is an experience a Ceramics student may never forget.
