Transformations Project Concept: To encourage creative thinking through the transformation of commonplace objects into new and unusual structures. Design students created illustrations which depict the following mechanisms for creative thinking- Simplify, Animate, Hybridize, Distort, and Alter Scale and Purpose.

Simplify
Description: Omit, remove parts, or stylize the object. Convert the object into geometric shapes.

Animate
Description: Bring inanimate objects to life. Give the object human or animal qualities.

Hybridize
Description: Cross-link the object with an unrelated item. Answer the question "What do you get when you cross a _____________ with the object.?"

Distort
Description: Twist out of a natural, normal, or original shape or condition.

Alter Scale and Purpose
Description: Dramatically change the proportion, ratio, relative size or dimensions. Assign the object a new function.

Multimedia students created a music video using their own original music. Students began this project by composing an original 40-measure song using Garageband. As an introduction to compositing, also known as green screen, Multimedia students learned how to layer multiple video tracks in Final Cut Express. The final product is a combination of composited video and their original soundtrack.

The following paintings are the culmination of the Painting Class' unit on still-life painting. Painting from observation is like learning a new language, especially in the digital age. It involves a coordination of the eye and the hand that requires tremendous concentration and practice. Students must become keen observers of light, shadow and color tone. It is remarkably different from working from a photograph or 2-D source image. The class did tremendous work, as you can see in the examples below.

Students in Computer Graphics became commercial artists hired to design a box for a new type of cereal. The type of cereal, name, and target audience were randomly chosen out of a hat.

After studying color theory related to commercial art and design, typography, and other various attention getting devices, the commercial artists began sketching and planning their ideas.

Graphics students were to use design elements to brand the cereal in the minds of their target audience, to explore original typography, and integrate words and images together in a creative composition.

The resulting works were created using graphics software. Successful designers will lure their audience into purchasing a product.

The following clay food sculptures were created by first year Art students following a study of the Pop Art movement.

The artists of the early 1960's created recognizable artwork based on subjects from everyday life, or popular ("pop") culture. Through this unit of study, Art I students became familiar with Pop Artists such as Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, and Claes Oldenburg.

Art I students then created food "sculptures" out of clay and were assessed on use of texture to produce value contrasts, "in-the-round" thinking, craftsmanship, and proper use of handbuilding techniques. Art I students were also assessed on accuracy of color, use of color value to accent textures, color intensity to control brightness, originality, and overall presentation.

Using photo-editing software, students in Computer Graphics completed the phrase “Wouldn’t it be a strange world if…”.
Students combined stock imagery with photographs from home to create a work of art that reversed a law of nature. The resulting images are surreal or fantasy-like, yet retain believability. Projects were assessed on tool usage, use of layers (10 or more) color balance, craftsmanship, focal point, composition (rule of thirds), and originality.

“Life moves pretty fast. If you don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.”

The words of the iconic teenage film protagonist Ferris Bueller could just as aptly be applied as a summary for Thornton Wilder’s oft-performed play, Our Town. Our lives are the buildup of precious moments in the present tense, which slowly present themselves as a whole week, year, decade, era and even life.

After studying the work of American Illustrator Norman Rockwell, Drawing students were asked to pause for a moment and look around to capture the precious moments of their lives within an ordinary day. Time will elapse before they experience nostalgia for their high school years. But, for all of us, the lesson of Our Town is poignant. We are all in times and places that will not last. We must be attentive to those moments in the present tense before they become the inaccessible past, as we will never be able to relive them again.

You can see in the artwork above important moments in the present for these nine drawing students.

"Do any human beings ever realize life while they live it?” In answer to Thornton Wilder’s question – no. Of course not. Art and theater are all attempts, though, to push us closer and teach us how to realize it.

Open Project in a New Window

A "Digital Mindscape" is a collaborative Computer Graphics project. The project involves a modern day twist on a creative exercise invented by surrealist artists in the 1920's.

In the 1920's version of the exercise, an artist would draw an image on a piece of paper, then folded it to hide the drawing. The paper would be passed on to the next artist to continue the drawing, and so on. Each artist added to the drawing without viewing what the previous artist had drawn. After several panels were completed, the entire drawing was unfolded to reveal an unexpected result. Artists would play this "game" to inspire creativity, originality, and collaboration.

Our modern day version involves the use of Adobe Photoshop photo editing software. Students create a 6"X6" digital panel, crop one inch from the edge and send the cropped piece to another student. The student expands the panel and continues the design using photographs and photo retouching tools within the Adobe Photoshop program. The process is then repeated.

In all, sixteen students created five panels each, for a total of 80 panels, resulting in a work of art that is 33 feet long, connecting end-to-end to create a 360° work of art.

The challenge for each student was to work within a strict timeframe (one class period per panel) and be creative. Students must also consider Photoshop techniques that they have learned throughout the semester - resolution, photo repair and clone tools, how to copy layers, flip, rotate, etc. This was an activity that challenged students to think critically and solve visual problems.

A video highlighting past and present student work in Multimedia class:

Multimedia is a semester course designed to allow you to capture, edit, and enhance digital images to create digital stories using specialized software including, but not limited to, Photshop, iMovie, and Garageband. This is a production oriented class.

Projects completed in this class will be placed in the student’s portfolio complete with reflections. This process will be a part of the evaluation for the lessons/projects. In addition, an oral presentation related to course content will be required.

The "Celebrating Newark Throughout The Ages Mural" has found a permanent home at the Fern Dell Historical Museum, scheduled to open on July 4th, 2009. The painting is surrounded by the artifacts, photos, posters and documents which showcase the community. Also on display will be a book entitled "Behind the Mural" which documents the entire project through photographs. June 8, 2009 Newark Paintings Displayed at Local Business

Beginning June 26th, Newark’s new Pizza Shack will display paintings depicting the village’s history. The collection of five paintings, depicting local scenes as they appeared in 1968, will be on permanent display. Through this project, art students used their painting skills to present historical information to the community as well as integrate art-making into other areas of the curriculum.

According to artist Amelia Martin, "Creating this painting was fun for me because I knew it was an important historical building in Newark and that some people still remember it. I hope the viewer knows that when they look at my painting they realize it is more than just a simple piece of work, but an important symbol to Newark, a part of Newark that still exists and holds memories within the community."

Computer Graphics is a semester course designed to allow you to discover the drawing, painting, and image making applications of Adobe Photoshop. "CG" Students create works of fine art and explore product design using the elements and principles of art.

Projects completed in this class will be placed in the student’s portfolio complete with reflections. This process will be a part of the evaluation for the lessons/projects. In addition, an oral presentation related to course content will be required.

Students in Advanced Studio Art class at Newark Community High School will showcase their personal artwork during an art opening at Charles B. Phillip Library in Newark on Friday, May 15th, 5:30-7:00 p.m.

The Advanced Studio class gives students an experience of what it is like to be a professional artist with an art opening and gallery exhibit.

Students in this class create five original art works during the course of the semester, write artist statements, matte and frame their works, arrange the works in a gallery space, and visit with the public about their works during the art opening.

Each of these works is an original work of art coming from the student's own ideas. I’m really proud of the classes' accomplishments this semester. This will be one of the most ambitious Advanced Studio art shows yet. Each student in this class has explored his or her own interests and ideas as an artist.

The exhibit will feature the work of Ashley Harris, Amelia Martin, Molly McCoy, Mike Selkow, Brier VanHorne, and Megan Watson.

Megan's exhibit will feature the theme "Country Living" which will include an original tile mosaic and a ceramic clock. Mike's display will feature a very large fountain made out of clay. He has also created several large-scale works in mixed media. Ashley has explored the theme of "time" in her works, and will display a three dimensional self portrait through time. She will also show her large painting of beets, which was recently awarded a first place at the Town and Country Art Show. Amelia's exhibit includes colorful large-scale oil pastel paintings, and an artists' book. Brier's works will surely draw the audiences in close with her very intricate ink and scratchboard drawings, and Molly will exhibit an original book containing over thirty miniature paintings, and a large drawing entitled "Crown for a Fool".

The artists will be present from 5:30p.m. - 7:00p.m. at the Art Opening to discuss their work. All students, family, staff, board members and the Newark community are welcome and invited to attend!

May 14, 2009 Artists from Two High Schools Collaborate on Graphic Design Project

The "Landscape of the Mind" is a collaborative art project between the computer graphics classes at Newark High School and Naperville Central High School. The project involves a modern day twist on a creative exercise invented by surrealist artists in the 1920's.

In the 1920's version of the exercise, surrealist artists drew an image on a piece of paper, then folded it to hide the drawing. The paper would be passed on to the next artist, and so on. Each artist adds to the drawing without viewing what the previous artist had drawn. After several panels were completed, the entire drawing was unfolded to reveal an unexpected result. Artists would play this "game" to inspire creativity, originality, and collaboration.

Our modern day version involves the use of Adobe Photoshop, email, and iChat video conferencing software. Students complete a digital panel, crop the edge and email the cropped piece to their partner at the collaborating school. The partner expands the panel and continues the design using photographs and photo retouching tools within the Adobe Photoshop program. In turn, the panel is cropped and emailed back to the original artist and the entire process is repeated.

Upon completion of the project, students will discuss the project and critique their results through a video conference. Students will also discuss the role of technology in creating distant collaborative opportunities.

“Overall, the students at Naperville Central High School are very excited to participate in these collaborative art pieces with Newark High School. They work hard everyday to design a creative square that will inspire Mr. Blidy's students” says Mrs. Murphy, co-teacher from Naperville Central.

“Students are challenged with this project. They must work within a strict timeframe and be creative. Students must also consider Photoshop techniques that they have learned throughout the semester - resolution, photo repair and clone tools, how to copy layers, flip, rotate, etc. It is a great activity that challenges students to think critically and solve visual problems.”

“Students are always really interested in seeing a new section of the art piece. We are always wondering what the students in Newark changed in the composition - how did the colors change or how did the image go from busy details to simple colorful shapes. It will be really exciting to see the final art pieces assembled together...and meet the students at Newark High School through video conferencing.”

The "Celebrating Newark Throughout The Ages Mural" has found a permanent home at the Fern Dell Historical Museum, scheduled to open on July 4th, 2009. The painting is surrounded by the artifacts, photos, posters and documents which showcase the community. Also on display will be a book entitled "Behind the Mural" which documents the entire project through photographs. Noel Cabadas was awarded Best of 3-D with his ceramic entry. Molly McCoy was awarded Best of School for her colored pencil drawing. Mike Selkow was awarded Judge's Choice for his drawing. Art I is a general introductory course designed for ALL students. NO prior art experience is necessary! Curious about art?, this is a great place to start! In Art I, the basic principles of design: line, shape, value, texture and color are introduced through "hands-on" projects in drawing, painting, and sculpture. All materials are provided for you, except a folder to keep your handouts in, and a pencil.

Design
Design is a general introductory course intended for ALL students. NO prior art experience is necessary! Curious about art?, this is a great place to start! In this one semester "hands-on" art course, students will expand their creativity and originality, as well as acquire knowledge and skills in craftsmanship and problem solving in preparation for Computer Graphics Class. Students will explore general considerations in the use of the elements and principles of design. All materials are provided for you, except a folder to keep your handouts in, and a pencil.

Drawing
Drawing I is a semester course (can be taken after Art I) designed to develop your ability to draw with ease and flexibility! You will be introduced to a variety of materials which may include colored pencil, chalk, scratch board, oil pastel, and ink. (Everything EXCEPT regular pencil!) Each unit will be accompanied by a studio project designed to allow beginning students to master skills, and advanced students use those skills creatively and expressively. This course promotes ideas in imagery and self expression. Outside sketches will be a part of the evaluation process.

Painting
Painting I (can be taken after Drawing) provides instruction in oil, watercolor, tempera, and acrylic painting. The class explores color theory and technique along with development of personal imagery with an enhancement of basic skills and knowledge. It is an introduction to painting through exercises and experiments to acquire control of the medium to promote ideas in imagery and self expression.

Ceramics
Ceramics I (can be taken after Art I) is a semester course in which introduction to clay places an emphasis on the exploration of hand building techniques with some sculpture, glaze application, wheel throwing, and kiln experience. All materials are provided for you, except a folder to keep your handouts in, plastic bags (walmart kind) to cover your projects, and newspaper (will be used daily). In addition, you may wish to bring an old shirt to class to wear each day to protect your clothing!

Computer Graphics
Computer Graphics (can be taken after Art I or Design) is a semester course designed to allow the student to discover the drawing, painting, and image making applications of Professional Image editing software. Students create works of ﬁne art and explore product design using the elements and principles of art. Sketches are part of the evaluation process.

Multimedia Presentations
Prerequisite: Computer Applications. Students will learn how to capture, edit, and enhance digital images to create digital stories using specialized software including iMovie, Quick Time, Garage Band, Photoshop, and Powerpoint. This is a production oriented course.

Advanced Studio
This is the class where you create five original, portfolio quality works that showcase your original ideas. At the end of the semester, you will prepare your own art exhibit (View 2006 Exhibit),(View 2007 Exhibit) to showcase these works! Outside time on art projects will be a part of the evaluation process. (Advanced Studio can be taken after successful completion - A or B - in of one of the following: Drawing, Painting, Ceramics.)

Mr. Grodek, a production artist for Sherry Matthews; an advocacy marketing corporation for non-profit agencies, joined us from Texas through iChat software. Mr. Grodek answered questions posed by Design students regarding his schooling and career. A new feature this year was the ability for our Mr. Grodek to view student work in real time. January 6, 2009 Reaching Out to Experts in the Field

On April 8th, Mr. Blidy’s computer graphics class used web conferencing to converse about various works of art they had produced. The expert they contacted was Amy Murphy, a former art director for Warner Bros. During her time with Warner Brothers, she helped in the production of television shows such as The X-Files and Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Right now she is a teacher at Naperville Central High School.

The Computer Graphics Class had the opportunity to interview her and ask her various questions about her career and creations. Then she observed the classes’ work and commented on it. What made this interview different was that instead of having the video of the interview projected on a big screen, the video was confined to the screen of a laptop computer. The students converged around the computer and the result was a much more personal and individual web conferencing experience.

In the future, the use of web conferencing will only increase and has so far been very helpful for many classes at Newark High School.

STATE GOAL 25: Know the language of the arts.
Why This Goal Is Important: Through observation, discussion, interpretation and analysis, students learn the “language” of the arts. They learn to understand how others express ideas in dance, drama, music and visual art forms. October 21, 2007 National Expert “Visits” the Art Room

Mr. Blidy's Multimedia Class has recently had the opportunity to have a video conference with Mr. Paul Ewen from New York. He is a writer, editor, and producer of public service commercials. He has been part of three Emmy Award winning broadcasts and has won a Promax Silver Award for his American Voice Campaign for MTV productions. He has published articles on editing including "The Essence of Editing: Much More Than Technical Aspects of a Program" in Student Filmmaker Magazine, June 2006.

The conference allowed the Multimedia Class to see and hear Mr. Ewen, who joined us from New York, using web cameras, video projectors, and iChat software. The video was projected to a large screen on the wall. The class was also able to watch some of his commercials, including "Vote For Something", "Global Warming", and "American Voice".

The class was able to ask him questions about his job, his commericals, and his creativity. "In all, this experience was very rewarding for NCHS students. It gave students a chance to meet and talk with an "outside expert" in the field" said Mr. Blidy. Prior to the interview, students created public service commericals of their own that Mr. Blidy posted on the school's web site for Mr. Ewen to view. During the interview, Mr. Ewen was able to provide valuable feedback about the student made commericals.

May 22, 2007 Celebration!

On May 22nd, Advanced Studio artists exhibited for the first time their "Celebrating Newark Throughout the Ages" Mural. The artists experienced a well-deserved sense of accomplishment through the collaborative work they did for the community by creating a large scale work of art. Like a community, the mural is a symbol for working collaboratively toward a common goal. The mural was true evidence of this triumph for the many people who attended as the community came together to celebrate the art students’ success.

A second unveiling will be scheduled at a later date when the mural will be exhibited and displayed permanently in the community.

Service Learning Projects

Computer Graphics & Foods III Collaborate in Fundraiser
Computer Graphics and Foods III collaborated in a fundraiser for victims of Japan's earthquake and tsunami. On April 14, 2011, Foods III students prepared nachos for sale during all lunch periods. Proceeds were be donated to benefit earthquake and tsunami relief efforts in Japan. The posters were designed by students in Computer Graphics Class in order to advertise the event. View Designs

Professional Experience: Button Designs for the Community
Each year the Newark Fourth of July Committee sells buttons to raise funds to support the Fourth of July festivities. The Newark High School computer Graphics Class provides the design for these buttons. Students create unique designs based on a theme provided by the Fourth of July Committee. Students earn service learning credit for submitting original ideas for consideration.

Students share talent with Pizza Shack
Beginning June 26th, 2009, Newark’s new Pizza Shack will display paintings depicting the village’s history. The collection of five paintings, depicting local scenes as they appeared in 1968, will be on permanent display. This was a great opportunity for Newark art students to be involved with the history of the community, experience civic pride and learn about the experiences of creating artwork in a situation where the artwork has been commissioned. A Collaborative Mural for the Community
We have recently completed a large-scale collaborative service learning project; a permanent mural painted by five students entitled “Celebrating Newark throughout the Ages.” This project was quite an achievement because it heightened students' skills in art communication and their ability to work with community boards, outside experts, and dignitaries, moving them from solo artists into communal artists, participants and leaders within their community. read more

Empowering Students through Multimedia Production
"A Public Service Announcement" is a project that combines service to others with multimedia production. This project involves writing, storyboarding, and then actually shooting and editing a video.

Public Art Opening & Exhibit: An Annual Event
Advanced studio is a class designed to give students an experience of what it is like to be a professional artist having an art opening and gallery exhibit. Each student in this class is explores his or her own interests and ideas as an artist. At the end of the semester, the local library is converted into a gallery space and the work is "unveiled". The art opening, which has now become an annual community event, is an evening where art students are present to discuss their work with the public. View photos from last year's art opening

Professional Experience: Poster Design for Local Law Enforcement Agency
Computer Graphics Class designed posters for "Drug Awareness and Resistance Education" Day. As a result, every student in Computer Graphics Class had a poster displayed in the community at a local business. Officer Dial visited the class and worked closely with Computer Graphics students as we designed posters for this worthwhile community event. View Examples

Fully Illustrated Children’s Books to Raise Awareness of Domestic Violence
Drawing students collaborated with Health class to create children's books on the theme of "bullying". These books were written by Health students and illustrated by my Drawing class. The books were then shared with elementary school children through Mutual Ground; a local resource for victims of domestic violence. View Book 1, View Book 2, View Book 3.
